In my continuing quest to explore new sock patterns, I’ve knit more socks in the Monkey theme.
Pattern: Based by Monkey at Knitty.
Yarn: 2 skeins Claudia’s Handpainted sock yarn, Pink Dot colorway.
Needles: Size 2 Addi’s, 2 circ style.
I continued with the M1 stitch in place of the YO in the pattern, as described before. This time, all purl stitches were knitted, resulting in a fabric that (I think) twists prettily down the foot.
And look! A short row heel. If you are looking for tips on knitting these, here are the links I found:
Purlwise – YO short row tutorial
Blue Blog patterns – short row tutorial
misocrafty – shot row heel tutorial
All very helpful.
27 Feb: ETA and of course I’m dumb and completely forget what I was going to ask. All of the above methods for short row heel/toe socking are great, but none could combat that hole of which we do not speak between the heel and gusset. Anyone out there know how to avoid such things without picking up stitches on short row heels? Or do you have to pick up a couple of stitches on each side to avoid it, like I wound up doing?
And with that, I’ve exhausted the stash of Claudia’s on hand. So it’s on to a new pattern. Only now I really mean it, as certain people have threatened bodily harm. We forge onward, though I’m not sure what pattern we’ll pick next.

Great socks! I love how your “evolving” the pattern based on your own experiences, likes, and dislikes.

LOVE IT! But really. Only five pair?! You call that an obsession? Peeshaw! Try twelve pairs and then we’ll talk.

Regarding those holes… I think everyone gets em, but no one talks about em.
I always always have to pick up an extra stitch in the gap, to prevent hole make sure where you are picking up a stitch doesnt make a bigger hole. And sometimes I pick up the stitch through the back loop. that helps too.

All five Monkeys are beautiful!
My first Monkey Socks were in Claudias Plumicious and I absolutely love them. While I haven’t knit five pair, I can see another pair in my future with the M1 mod. I like the no purl version too.
What Jolene said about the short-row hole. Or stick with your lovely eye of partridge flap heels.

I like your version better than the original:) I pick up bars one or two rows back depending and knit them together for a couple of rounds.

hey there.
i found you from cara at january one.
with that hole?
I usually pick up a stitch there, but twist it, and knit it together with the next stitch… (to keep the stitch # the same, of course, and to immediately deal with the hole)
it seems to result in less of a hole.
next time i’ve got some socks around (I use almost exclusively short row heels, because i like them, not because they wear better.
i’ll be sure to pic that spot.
