Greetings, fellow knitter. Ready to discuss some socks?
Up for show and tell today are not just one, but two pairs in a familiar pattern with a different twist. You might have seen a pattern called Monkey appear over at Knitty. If you spend any kind of time around me/this blog, you should be well aquantied with it.
I love the pattern. I wanted to knit several pairs in it (and have done so!) but I was also wary of the holes in the pattern. Nice for a pair or two. Holes aren’t practical in all my socks. Enter Barbara Walker and her treasury #1.
I found a pattern called the “Double Wing Pattern, Openwork version” (ETA: Sadly, no longer pictured at the Barbara Walker Treasury Project… maybe someday it will return!) which was essentially the Monkey pattern. There was also a variation listed in the book as “Double Wing Pattern” which instead of making the yarn over, picked up a stitch (M1) in their places and a Knit into Back/Front for the double YO. This forms a more solid fabric.
So I went a little crazy.
Claudia’s Handpainted, Blue Terracotta colorway.
Claudia’s Handpainted, Pistacio colorway.
The most exciting part of these socks was the different heel flap; I had never done an Eye of Partridge before.
Row 1: *Sl1 purl wise, K1, repeat from * across.
Row 2: Sl1 purl wise, purl across.
Row 3: Sl1 purl wise, *Sl1 purlwise, K1*, repeat across to last stitch, K1.
Row 4: Sl1 purl wise, purl across.
Repeat these 4 rows until you have desired number of heel flap stitches.
I am trying one more variation on the theme in the last bit of Claudia’s I have stashed away, this time with a short row heel. After this I know I need to take a break from this pattern as much as I love it, else I will end up hating the idea of knitting another sock. That, and my friends might divine an intervention.
I don’t think it’s quite that bad. Yet.

SOME people happen to be extremely curious about a CERTAIN THING which SOMEONE is supposed to be SPINNING.
I have no idea what the deal was with the message you left me this morning. Something about absurdly difficult knots?! I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE THINGS! Well, okay, I do, but the knots didn’t come from the manufacturer, but the tardly girl who lives next door.
Man, I am super sick. Gonna take some codiene and call it a night. Catch ya laters, rachface.

I love the BW Treasuries; I recognize so many stitch patterns from there. Thanks for the Eye of Partridge Heel instrux – I think I’ll do that on my next socks. Also, I believe you asked about avoiding the hole in short row heels. Cosmic Pluto instructs (in her tutorial) to wrap the stitches on either side of the heel (the top-of-the-foot stitches that are just hanging out while you knit the heel). It worked for me!

Hi – I came via Cara.
I’ve been eyeing the Monkey for some time, but wasn’t keen for the holes. I love your mods. So you just did M1 everytime the pattern called for YO? What about in the second row of the pattern where it calls for YO2?
I hope you don’t mind me bugging you with such questions. I’m just really keen to tackle these socks sans holes.
thanks!

Just found your monkey’s through January one.
You are nuts for the monkeys, aren’t you. In a good way of course, and they’re all very nice. I’m about to knit some myself. Finishing up my first Cookie pattern (Baudelaire) just now.
I followed the walker link above and you may want to check it.

Hi there! I’m with Jen on the comment above – if you do the KFB on the stitch with the YO2, doesn’t that leave you with one less stitch? Just curious! I’m planning to tackle these without the holes as well, using your mod of knitting all of the stitches without purling – I love the look of the twists!
Thanks!
